Rockwood is in an ideal location to explore the stunning scenery, natural environment and visitor attractions of the Western Lake District. There are many activities to enjoy, including gentle country rambles along the rivers Esk, Mite and Duddon to some of the most challenging mountain walking, fell-running, mountain-biking and road cycling in England. There are numerous places to visit, such as the Roman fort at Hard Knott (upper Eskdale), Muncaster Castle and Wordsworth’s birth place, Cockermouth. The Cumbrian coast has a rich and fascinating industrial heritage and the towns of Whitehaven, Barrow-in-Furness and Maryport have much to offer the visitor. The famous narrow gauge Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (“La’al Ratty”) can be seen from Rockwood as it passes through Irton Road station on its way from Ravenglass on the coast to Dalegarth (Boot) in Eskdale. Eskdale retains strong roots in hill farming which allows the visitor a glimpse of authentic Cumbrian (Cumberland) life.
