Sure you could take a dog. We were there in the end of March in the late afternoon and there was no one else around. Except for the old cemetery there isnt much there but the scenery is beautiful. It's just a little side excursion. As far as I know there are no hiking trailheads or anything, just a ride in look around and ride out.

The access road is some miles away from Kanab. You can stop at the Kanab visitor center (which is the same as the Escalante visitor center) and they will tell you how far it is. You can get all your info there. I would suggest to stop there first because the ranger will tell you about all the weather conditions and closures before heading out. Its beautiful so don't miss out!
