The Temple Mount Sifting Project is an archaeological endeavor open to the public, enabling people from all walks of life and all ages to experience hands-on the excitement of archaeological discovery in the ancient heart of Jerusalem. The Project was established in order to salvage archaeological artifacts from the massive heaps of soil that were removed illegally and destructively from the Temple Mount during renovations conducted in 1999. The Project provides a rare and unique opportunity to reveal archaeological artifacts buried within soil from the Temple Mount. The goal of the project is to preserve, research and make public the countless artifacts which reveal the rich history of Jerusalem’s most important site.

Yes, you do have to make reservations on their website. They charge a little sum of money for their expenses since the government is not really into it. Sifting is the part that anyone can help to, but the expensive part according to what I understood is the work of the researchers who clean, sort out and date the artifacts discovered. Hope it helped. P.s There’s a bus going right up to the sifting project.
