Penguin pair Wotsit and Peach laid two of the eggs that hatched this year, according to the zoo. Experts at the zoo shared the eggs between the nests of Wotsit and Peach and Scampi and Flounder.

A same-sex penguin couple is helping raise one of 10 rare chicks. The Humboldt penguin chick is being reared at Chester Zoo by Scampi and Flounder, who were given one of two eggs laid by another pair, Wotsit and Peach. Bird experts at the zoo divided the eggs to improve the chances of both chicks fledging successfully.

Chester Zoo has been celebrating a bumper year for penguins after ten rare chicks hatched at the zoo. The rare new arrivals are highly threatened Humboldt penguins, one of the most at risk out of the world’s 17 species of penguin, and began hatching from their eggs between April 16 and 28.
