GM has announced that a retooling of the Ultium Spring Hill battery plant in Tennessee will begin this year to start producing cost-effective LFP cells by 2027.
Ultium Cells LLC will upgrade its manufacturing plant in Tennessee to produce lower-cost lithium iron phosphate – or LFP – battery cells.
GM said Monday it is working with joint venture partner LG Energy Solution to upgrade its Ultium battery factory to make lithium-iron-phosphate cells for the automaker’s low-cost EVs.
GM produces the Cadillac Escalade at Arlington Assembly in Texas and both the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado are made at Fort Wayne Assembly in Indiana. GM said the truck production slated to begin at Orion in 2027 will be in addition to truck production in Fort Wayne.
