While longtime Louisville activists Mattie Jones and Rhonda Mathies believe Hankison’s conviction and prison term, though short, furthers the ongoing fight for civil rights, equality and justice, it also still feels like a small piece of the pie in terms of accountability.

Advocates have released comments in response to the Trump Justice Department recommending to a federal judge that there was “no need for a prison sentence” for former LMPD officer Brett Hankison.

The sentencing was postponed while the court waited for the Department of Justice's sentencing recommendation.

The statement follows the U.S. Department of Justice's recommendation that Brett Hankison receive a one-day sentence.
