Malaysia is introducing new export restrictions on U.S. AI chips in an attempt to prevent these chips from being smuggled into China.

Malaysia’s trade ministry announced on Monday that, effective immediately, any export, transshipment or transit of high‑performance AI chips originating from the United States will need a Strategic Trade Permit.

Malaysia clamped down on Monday (Jul 14) on the export, transhipment and transit of all US-made artificial intelligence chips, seeking to stop illegal trade, including to countries such as China. "Effective immediately,
