‘We couldn’t be happier’: Oregon Zoo welcomes its newest baby elephant, and it appears to be a girl
The Oregon Zoo’s newest baby elephant arrived over the weekend. At 4:29 p.m. Saturday, Rose-Tu gave birth to a calf that appeared to be a healthy girl, weighing in the vicinity of 200 pounds. The birth came after 20 months of pregnancy.

Tu’s baby has a name! The young Asian elephant calf, born at the Oregon Zoo on Feb. 1, will henceforth be known as Tula-Tu, a name chosen by care staff to reflect both her individual character and significance to the herd.

Oregon Zoo’s Asian Elephant Calf Has a Name: Tula-Tu
The Oregon Zoo has determined that the newest member of its Asian elephant herd is indeed a girl, and given her a name: Tula-Tu. Oregon Zoo director Heidi Rahn made the announcement live on NBC’s Today show this morning. Tula means “balance” in Sanskrit, Rahn said.
