The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is alerting drivers to a text message scam demanding money for unpaid tolls. Officials said new versions have been used recently, including one purporting to be a collection agency authorized to work on behalf of the turnpike.

“Smishing,” or SMS (Short Message Service) phishing, is when scammers try to obtain your personal information via a text message. According to the Federal Trade Commission, the text might include a dollar amount for how much you supposedly owe, as well as a link.

People who receive an unsolicited text, email, or similar message suggesting it is from the Pa. Turnpike or another toll/collection agency should not click on the link.
