Valentine's Day is a celebration of the heart. But some of the clichéd approaches to commemorate it – we're looking at you, big red box of candy and decadent dinner out – are not that great for your actual heart.

Nowadays, heart-shaped boxes full of chocolate and candy are ubiquitous, but how did they become such a staple of Valentine's Day in the first place?

The National Retail Federation (NRF) expects this Valentine’s Day to be the most lucrative to date. Due to its recent survey of more than 8,000 U.S. consumers, the NRF estimates that Americans will spend $27.5 billion on the holiday this year, breaking all records. More than half of survey respondents said they’re planning to celebrate.
