In fitting the car with a 700-CFM Rochester Quadrajet carb, a higher 11.3:1 compression, and a set of upgraded valves, Mercury yielded some 370 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque from the Cyclone.

Mercury had actually envisioned the '70 Spoiler to be the high-performance trim of the Cyclone, but when everything fell apart, it was abandoned. There is only one 1970 Cyclone Spoiler in existence.

This new configuration was standard on the Comet Cyclone GT, and customers loved it. The engine developed 265 horsepower standard, but Mercury didn't want to stop there.
