However, National Siblings Day was founded in the U.S. in 1995 by Claudia Evart, who created the day after losing her brother and sister at a very early age, per National Today.

Since 1998, 49 states have issued proclamations to observe National Siblings Day on April 10. Former presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama have also recognized the holiday.

Evart chose April 10 because it was her sister Lisette’s birthday. She also created the “Siblings Day Foundation,” which is working to make the holiday federally recognized in the U.S.
