Work in process is the term for a product that is being manufactured, but which is not yet completed. That is, WIP doesn't include raw materials that have not been used yet or completed goods.
If work-in-process inventory is worth $10,000 and the final value of those products upon completion is $50,000, the additional $40,000 in production costs must be accounted for as the costs are added.
Work in process usually refers to more standardized manufacturing practices of smaller products, while work in progress usually refers to larger, longer builds of more technical assets.
