The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health alert about an outbreak in Uganda of deadly Sudan virus disease, a viral hemorrhagic fever that is in the same family as Ebola.

Amid a new Ebola outbreak in Kampala, Uganda, the World Health Organization has kicked off a vaccine trial. This is the first Ebola outbreak in the country since 2022, when cases emerged in the Mubende District. While both outbreaks involve the same virus species — Sudan Ebolavirus (SUDV) — genetic analysis confirms they’re not connected.
