Pakistan and China were recently at loggerheads over the control and ownership of Gwadar Port with Islamabad stating that the port, which was built with substantial Chinese investment, belongs solely to Pakistan and won't be handed over to any foreign entity.
The Chinese embassy in Pakistan yesterday said China was committed to Gwadar Port and development of Balochistan. Responding to a media inquiry, the embassy spokesperson dismissed The Guardian's article's reported quotation of a Chinese diplomat as 'completely untrue' and devoid of credibility.
The Gwadar airport, funded under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), was initiated in March 2019 during Imran Khan’s tenure and inaugurated in October 2024 by Shahbaz Sharif.
