After 529 days on the run, Valerie the dachshund is safe and sound. The eight-pound sausage dog recently made headlines around the world for surviving on a rugged Australian island for more than a year.

For 528 days, Valerie the miniature dachshund survived in the Australian wilderness by eating roadkill, evading venomous snakes and eluding the grasp of humans who wanted to rescue her. All the while, her owners worried about whether they would see her again.

A runaway sausage dog named Valerie has been captured after a 529-day adventure, transfixing Australia as she roamed an island teeming with kangaroos, possums, koala bears and penguins.
