Athena is scheduled for touchdown on Thursday at 12:32 p.m. ET and hopes to succeed where its predecessor faltered.

The six-legged Athena, carrying 11 payloads and scientific instruments, targeted its landing site some 100 miles (160 km) from the lunar south pole for a touchdown timed for 12:32 p.m. ET (1732 GMT).

The Houston-based company is poised to land its Athena spacecraft on the moon at 12:30 p.m. ET. The landing site closer to the lunar south pole than any human or vehicle has traveled before.
