Sky watchers will be treated to something special as the Lyrids meteor shower reaches its peak ... Meteorites that have made their way to the Earth's surface are small pieces of an asteroid.

The meteor shower itself, though, has been observed for 2,700 years ever since the first recorded sighting was made in 687 BC by the Chinese, according to NASA.
