George Simion, the nationalist conservative candidate representing the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), has clearly won the first round of Romania’s presidential election. The 38-year-old politician, who describes himself as a “pro-Romanian” and is often described as a big supporter of Donald Trump, secured nearly 41 per cent of the vote.

BUCHAREST (Reuters) -Romanian hard-right candidate George Simion was ahead in a presidential election first round, followed by centrist candidate Crin Antonescu, an exit poll showed on Sunday. A separate exit poll put Simion in first place and centrist candidates Antonescu and Nicusor Dan neck and neck in second.
