As the Fourth of July holiday approaches and families are planning beach time, some people on Long Island have lingering fears of the ocean.

A 20-year-old woman suffered minor injuries when she was apparently bitten by a stand tiger shark while standing in waist-deep water, according to officials.

Shark patrols will be scanning local beaches on Long Island after a shark bite incident sparked fear in beachgoers. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman made a public appearance in the waters at Nickerson Beach to prove to locals that the waters are safe.
