Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is looking to protect Texans' genetic data with action filed this week in ongoing 23andMe bankruptcy case.

The state attorney general wants a bankruptcy court to ensure 23andMe or any purchaser comply with Texas laws on the sale, transfer or disclosure of genetic and other sensitive personal data.

Twenty-seven states and the District of Columbia have sued the bankrupt genetic testing company 23andMe in an effort to block the company's sale of its customers' genetic data.

Sen. Josh Hawley told the 23andMe interim CEO that he hopes their customers "sue you into oblivion" over concerns that the company was holding onto their data.

“People did not submit their personal data to 23andMe thinking their genetic blueprint would later be sold off to the highest bidder," one attorney general said.
