The ceremony’s host will be Cynthia Erivo, a 2016 Tony winner for her role as Celie in “The Color Purple,” who is fresh off a whirlwind year of “ Wicked ” press tours and an Oscar nomination.

George Clooney and Sarah Snook are among the Tony Award nominees, while Audra McDonald makes history, and Jake Gyllenhaal and Denzel Washington of “Othello” miss out.

Tony Award nominations have been handed out, and the five shows competing for best musical are “Buena Vista Social Club,” “Dead Outlaw,” “Death Becomes Her,” “Maybe Happy Ending” and “Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical.
