The Italian marque planned to go fully electric in 2027 but will now continue offering gas powertrains as it plots a radical reimagining of the Giulia sedan.

Alfa might not be all-electric by 2027, but the Italian automaker is reportedly ditching its storied Giulia sedan.

Alfa Romeo’s boss Santo Ficili told French car magazine L’Argus the next-generation Giulia will feature “a new design with a new type of bodywork.” Later Ficili confirmed that the next-generation Stelvio crossover and Giulia sedan will ride on the same Stellantis STLA Large platform.

The future of the Alfa Romeo Giulia is starting to look a whole lot less exciting than its current sports sedan self. Rather than another conventional-bodied upright SUV, Alfa could be looking at something more stylish for this one by way of a crossover coupe. The style, popularized by the BMW X6 and a host of Mercedes-Benz SUV Coupe and Audi Sportback models, is less stodgy than the usual SUV, and that suits the brand's character well.

The new Alfa Romeo Stelvio is due this spring and the next Giulia will follow in 2026 as a fastback crossover. Both will utilize the new Dodge Charger platform

Alfa Romeo is joining the long list of car companies scaling back their EV plans. A few days ago, new CEO Santo Ficili told French media L’Argus that the brand won’t become fully electric by 2027 as previously envisioned and will instead implement a multi-energy strategy.

Over the following 15 years, 572,646 Giulia saloons would roll out of Alfa Romeoʼs new factory at Arese, and, although overshadowed today by the 105 familyʼs more glamorous GTs, curvaceous Spiders, cool cabriolets and exotic prototypes, Sattaʼs Giulia trendsetter deserves to lead our celebratory parade.
