Phomopsis cane and leafspot appears as tiny dark spots with yellowish margins on leaf blades and veins. Spots first show 3 to 4 weeks following rain. Leaf death may occur if large numbers of spots build up.

Phomopsis cane and leaf spot is a disease that causes symptoms in the common grapevine species, Vitis vinifera, in many regions of the world. [2] This disease is mainly caused by the fungal pathogen, Phomopsis viticola, and is known to affect many cultivars of table grapes, such as Thompson Seedless, Red Globe, and Flame Seedless. [3]

Phomopsis typically becomes established on current year's shoots, or it invades stressed and weakened plant parts through some type of wound (i.e. a canker, pruning wound and insect feeding site). However, Phomopsis can also gain entry through buds and progress down the stem.

Phomopsis cane and leaf spot can affect most parts of the grapevine, including canes, leaves, rachises (cluster stems), flowers, tendrils, and berries and can cause vineyard losses by: Weakening canes, which makes them more susceptible to winter injury. Damaging leaves, which reduces photosynthesis.

Phomopsis is a prevalent grape disease in Minnesota, and should be sprayed for as part of your early season spray program between bud break and pre-bloom stages. If uncontrolled, it causes brown and black lesions on the canes, black/yellow spots on the leaves, and rot on the ripe berries that can lead to weaker plants and yield loss.

Phomopsis weakens vines, reduces yields and quality of grapes, and increases the severity of secondary rots. Symptoms and signs: Phomopsis symptoms are commonly seen first in the spring as elongated lesions near the base of shoots on the first 3 to 6 internodes.

Infected leaves have small, yellowish spots with dark brown centers and may be puckered. On petioles, shoots and rachises, elongated black spots or streaks develop that make the tissue brittle. Most shoot lesions occur on the basal three to six internodes. Young tissues are most susceptible. Symptoms appear 21 to 30 days after infection.

Phomopsis canker affects a wide variety of conifers and woody broadleaves in part because there are many Phomopsis (=Diaporthe) species pathogens. The fungi mostly infect and kill branches less than 4 inches in diameter, but occasionally kill larger branches or the main trunk.
