You would know a Cottonmouth from a black snake easily because they're very thick and have a distinct head shape that other pit vipers have. Black snakes will eat rattle snakes and cottonmouths.

Racers, which are sometimes mistaken for black rat snakes, have very bad dispositions and will not hesitate to bite over and over (and over). Jul 3, 2018 · I use this in our barn and it really has reduced the number of black snakes. I used to find 5-7 snake skins a year in the barn. We have had them in the house and once found a snake skin in a dresser drawer. Careful with the black snakes as, although non venomous, they can bite severely as I found out.

Also sometimes you see a rat snake aka corn snake. they are very pretty and are usually either yellow or red/orange. They are harmless to humans and dogs. I have no problems with opossum, dilloes, skunks, moles/voles and mice, but snakes - no thanks. If you are talking about snakes in fresh water, sure there will be an occasional water moccasin, but they likely will be on the marsh side and/or in the canals. Yet the times I've been kayaking around, I never seen one on AI.

(At that age, as later, they look very much like black racers, but can be distinguished because of the lack of fading on the tail, and because racers are much more aggressive!) Mary Ann789's suggestion of ring-necked snake sounds like the likeliest to me, too.

I dont think snakes are really that big a problem personally, but its still a good idea to use caution when walking in any grassy area or near any water.
